Youtube uriah heep the wizard7/30/2023 As I understand it, when they started recording Very 'Eavy, Very 'Umble, they were still called Spice, but Bron didn't think it was a good enough name or whatever, so he changed it to Uriah Heep. I think Spice is a better name for a band than Uriah Heep.Īpparently, Gary Bron didn't share that view. That was the first time I ever heard either name. The Gods are also mentioned in the liner notes of Uriah Heep Live, specifically that Greg Lake and Mick Taylor were both in the group. PS - I suspected that Uriah Heep was the model for Spinal Tap :-) If it wasn't for Heep, I probably would have never remembered hearing this song. I have no idea what year this song was written but it might have been pre Vietnam.Īgain, very interesting song to be covered by so many artists in so many different styles and arrangements. Interesting in that the Weavers were black listed by McCarthyism and got very little radio, air or stage opportunities as a result. The Weavers included Pete Seeger, the first time I heard this song was on their 15 year reunion recording at Carnegie Hall in 1963. Originally written and performed by The Weavers in the fifties. The anti-war theme "Come Away Melinda" was covered by:ġ) Judy Collins (sounds like a PBS children's song)Ģ) Velvet Underground (porta organ and all)ģ) Bobbie Gentry (yes the same woman who recorded "Ode to Billie Joe"Ĥ) Mama Cass (yes from the MaMaS and PaPaS)ĥ) Barry St John (scotish woman) released in 1965 (also sounds like a PBS children's song in places)Ħ) Harry Belafonte (yes, he was an activist way back then too)ħ) UFO - space rock (reminds me of early Floyd)Ĩ) Heep - early PROG TRON (the intro still makes me smile) - and I might add My Favorite version Melinda is a good song to teach what arrangement can do for a song. I guess my limit goes up to the EASY LIVING LP, after which, they become more popular and probably made a ton of cash in that era.Ī song I find very interesting was "come away Melinda" cover that HEEP did.
